Are they really true LED TVs?

LED TV? - the short answer is no! But they do have an excellent picture - far superior to the standard LCD and even Plasma TVs. The long answer: There are multiple types of LED Televisions on the market today. In general, these LED TV’s are actually a combination of LCD and LED technologies. This gives you some of the best picture quality available with a television. If you really want a TV where the picture is created be LED's then you need to look at OLED, but a word of advice you need big bucks and the displays are small, typically 11" at present. Back to LED/LCD TVs. There are two forms of LED Televisions available. Both of these television types have LCD displays. They are illuminated and lit by LED's, making them a LCD and LED mix. These televisions can be backlit by LEDs, or edge-lit from the side of the screen.

LCD displays started the flat panel television, paving the way for the multiple types of flat screen TVs. The LCD display allows for a clearer picture, and comes in the form of a lighter television.
The liquid crystals in a LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) all face in one direction. When the electric field is created, the crystals align in the images for the screen. About LED Technology

The LED technology is what brings the LED TV to a new level. The LED technology replaces the old fluorescent lighting that used to be in TVs. Small LEDs are placed behind the TV or on the sides of the TV. LED Televisions can use two types of LED lights. Some TVs use RGB LEDs. Others use white LEDs. Both types of LED's offer benefits over the old fluorescent tubes.

The major benefit of LED Television comes from the technology itself. Fluorescent tubes were not able to create a deep black, as they were always on. LEDs allow for a deep black. This gives greater contrast to the screen.
LED Televisions are thinner and tent to be lighter than normal TVs. Side-lit LED Televisions are the thinnest of them all. Both have excellent contrast.
LED Televisions are actually better for the environment, as compare to other televisions. These TVs use less power than the old version of televisions. The manufacturing process does not use mercury, while the old process did. Avoiding the use of mercury is better for overall safety and the protection of the environment.
